Edward James "Sonny" Cross Sr., 81, a resident of Shaftsbury Hollow Road died Monday August 1, 2016 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness.
He was born in Bennington, VT October 28, 1934. He was the son of the late Perle and Irene (Gulley) Cross. Sonny received his early education at the one room school house in White Creek, New York where he was taught by Miss Pierce. He later graduated from Hoosick Falls High School.
He married the former Mary Sargood July 14, 1956 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, New York. Mrs. Cross died June 16, 2003.
In earlier years Sonny was employed at the BenMont Paper Company in Bennington. He later worked as an apprentice for Sol Waite at Waites Oil which he eventually bought from Sol and renamed it Cross Oil. In 1974 he sold the oil company to spend more time with his family and spend more time with his favorite past time farming.
He enjoyed going to the races at both Devils Bowl and Lebanon Valley. He was a former member of the Bennington Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Helen Telford (Pat) of White Creek, N.Y., Lynn Cushing of Bennington, Phyllis Arnold (Jay) of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Denise Cross (Bill Seaward) of Albany, N.Y. and Perle Cross (Tracy) of White Creek, N.Y.; Thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; Three sisters, Phyllis Ruggles of Shaftsbury Hollow and Theresa Livingston and Doris Lucas both of White Creek, N.Y., along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by two sons, Edward Cross Jr. and Richard M. "Rick" Cross, a brother Perle Cross and a sister Virginia Green.
A memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday August 6, at 1:00 p.m.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The burial will take place in the family lot at the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in Shaftsbury, VT.
