E. Nancy Moen Holmes

July 22, 1940 — February 12, 2022

Nancy Moen Holmes, 81, a resident of Shaftsbury, VT, died peacefully Saturday February 12, 2022 at her residence surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born in Neptune, NJ on July 22, 1940 as Elise Nancy Moen, yet was known by her middle name throughout her life. She was the daughter of the late Dirk and Elise (Grander) Moen. Nancy was a graduate of Neptune High School and Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, NJ and became a registered nurse. She married Robert L. Holmes on April 14, 1962 and they shared 56 happily-wedded years together, until he passed away on September 8, 2018.

Nancy was a dedicated nurse, first at Fitkin Hospital in Neptune, NJ (now known as Jersey Shore University Medical Center), then at Point Pleasant Hospital in Point Pleasant, NJ. She then worked for Dr. Richard Kellner in Brick, NJ and later returned to Point Pleasant Hospital, spending the final years of her career in her favorite post, the Recovery Room, until she retired in 1992.

Nancy was a very active volunteer for many years, teaching Sunday school & vacation Bible school at Saint Paul's Methodist Church in Brick, NJ. She was a den mother with Boy Scouts and a troop leader with Girl Scouts, and she also served as class mother for many years while her children attended school.

Nancy and Bob lived and raised their family in Point Pleasant, NJ. When they retired, they followed their dream and moved to Shaftsbury, VT, and together they formed "Holmes'craft," a country woodworking and crafts shoppe. A talented seamstress and quilter, Nancy was a member of the Quiet Valley Quilters Guild and the Piecemakers Quilt Guild in Bennington, VT. Most recently the group made masks and surgical caps for the health care industry during the pandemic.

Survivors include her children, Jennifer Holmes Enright and her husband Peter of Point Pleasant, NJ, Timothy Holmes and his wife Jeanmarie of Hudson, NH and Debbie Perrine of Barnegat, NJ, her nine grandchildren, Jack, Grace and Paige Enright, Samantha White and Mackenzie and Jared Holmes, Andrew Holmes and Ayden and Addison Fillman, and her two great-grandsons, Troy Mitchell and Beckham Croft. Nancy is also survived by two sisters, Carolyn Boud (Roger) of Bennington, VT and Janet Zatta (Leo) of Highland Lakes, NJ, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Robert L. Holmes, her son, Andrew S. Holmes, and her brother, Richard Moen.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Saturday, February 26, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A celebration of Nancy's life will immediately follow.

The family is planning a graveside ceremony this spring as Nancy and Bob are to be interred together at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls, NJ.
