Drue Shea, 88, passed away at Brookdale on June 5 after a long illness. She died peacefully surrounded by family.
Born in Teaneck N.J. in 1929 to Lloyd Springsted and Adelaide Finnegan Springsted, she was raised mostly on the East Coast and entered the University of Vermont to study Literature and Psychology in 1948. It was here that she met, Donald F.Shea, a recent WWII veteran and transfer from Georgetown University, who was pursuing pre-medical studies. They married, started a family, graduated and then moved to his home town of Bennington where his older brother, James Shea, had just started his own medical practice.
With the exception of regular trips to Florida in the winter and the New Jersey seashore in the summer, the couple spent the next, nearly half century in Bennington before Dr. Shea's passing in 1999. They raised four children, were active in the community and church, and could be found on the Mount Anthony Country Club golf course whenever Vermont weather permitted. A girl of many tastes, she loved Frank Sinatra, Big Band, Broadway musicals, the New York Giants, Notre Dame football, and the Boston Red Sox. The after dinner card game with her grandchildren was one of her favorite activities.
Drue was athletic and intellectually curious and was as proud of her two "Hole-in-One's" at Mount Anthony as she was with her skill at duplicate bridge. She played for many years in golf tournaments throughout the state and participated in decades of weekly bridge games in Bennington, Manchester and finally, "on-line". She was also an avid reader, finishing at least one book a week for most of her life until her vision no longer permitted.
She is survived by her children: Donald F. Shea, Jr. M.D of Albany, Stephen M. Shea, M.D of Los Angeles, Sandra A.Shea of Rocky Hill, Ct. and Scott D.Shea (Allison) of Ft. Myers, FL, as well as by 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, July 21st at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Saint Francis Catholic Church on Main Street in Bennington.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Cancer Center or Hospice of Bennington, c/o E.P. Mahar & Son, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
