Dorothy May Wise

May 24, 1928 — September 12, 2024

Dorothy May Coyle Wise, widow of George Wise, passed away on September 12, 2024 at the Vermont Veterans’ Home in Bennington, Vermont. George and Dorothy were married on September 10th, 1949 in Stratford, Connecticut and had 59 years together. After he passed, she moved to Vermont at the age of 85 to live with her family.

In her high-school years, she joined the Civil Air Patrol and did her first solo flight at the age of 16. Obtaining her pilot’s license was one of her proudest memories. If anyone asked her about those days, she’d get a glint in her eye as she’d talk about trouble they’d get into.

Dorothy had many interests in her life. Her family and her beloved pets. Her immense doll collection, her gardens, reading, and doing crafts. She was always baking cakes and cookies. The neighborhood kids knew her door was open for them. They knew they were safe at her house, had food to eat and a shoulder to cry on.

When Dorothy retired from Sikorsky Air Craft, she and George started to travel to Vermont to visit their family. Somehow she always managed to return with a doll (or three) to add to her collection. There wasn’t a room in the house that didn’t have as many dolls as it could hold - it was really just the dolls’ house, she and George just lived there.

Dorothy leaves behind her daughter Georgette (Stan) Krawczyk of Vermont, son Thomas Wise in Connecticut, daughter Margaret (Gary) Fenn in South Carolina, and son-in-law Robert Thorn in Vermont. Her grandchildren Carey (Josh) Bunker, Laura Delaney (Dickie), Courtney Thorn all from Vermont, Michelle (Neil) Loughrie from California, Nick (Josie) Fenn from Texas. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Alexander Bunker, Rhoan Bunker, Liam Bunker, James Fenn, and Luke Fenn. Dorothy also leaves behind her nephew Clifford (Judy) Barrows and their family, her niece Jackie (Richard) Porter and her family.

Dorothy was not only predeceased by her husband, but her oldest daughter Suzanne Wise-Thorn of Vermont.

Her burial will be alongside her husband and dog Sparky in Connecticut at a later date.

If friends and family should desire, they may send contributions to the Vermont Veterans’ Home Cardinal Wing. The care that Dorothy received there was above and beyond and the family is most grateful.
