Dorothy Foster

July 26, 1933 — September 23, 2024

Dorothy Foster, 91, of North Pownal, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on September 23, 2024.

Born on July 26, 1933, to Albert and Eunice Sawyer, she graduated from Bennington High School in 1950. She was active in her class and enjoyed many friends. On November 3, 1951, she married Paul Foster at St. Francis De Sales Church, and in 1957, they purchased a farm that Dorothy lovingly helped operate. She enjoyed delivering milk to Whitney’s Processing Plant in Stanford, Vermont, always bringing her children to assist her. The farm remains in operation today, run by their youngest son, Michael.

Dorothy also worked at Ever Ready Battery Co. and Dewey's Nursing Home in Pownal, Vermont. She was a talented craftsperson, enjoying ceramics, gardening, and crocheting. She appreciated country and western music and being with her family.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Paul; her parents, Albert and Eunice; her eldest son Paul (Cheryl); her brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Judi Sawyer; and a sister, Nancy Farnum.

She is survived by a sister, Sandy Harrington of Connecticut, and her children: Darlene Church (Mike Luczynski) of North Pownal, and Michael Foster (Sandy) of North Pownal. Dorothy leaves behind five grandchildren: Brian (Heather) Foster, Bruce Foster, Arianne Cutter (Roderick), Nathan Church (Darcy), and Seth Foster, as well as nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Special thanks to the staff of Fairwinds Residential Home for their care over the past 8 years, and to Wanda and Wayne King for their warmth, sensitivity, and dedication to her well-being.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held at Mahar Funeral Home in Bennington, VT on Friday, September 27 at 12:00 pm. Friends and family are invited to call from 11:00-12:00 pm prior to the service. The burial for Dorothy will follow the service at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.
