Doris S. Buchanan Vail (Stone)

Doris S. Buchanan Vail, 85, a former resident of Gage Street, Bennington and resident of Marietta, Georgia, died May 3, 2019.

Born in Bennington February 3, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Fred Stone and Yvonne (Turgeon) Stone Gladue. Doris received her education in Bennington and was a member of the Class of 1952 at Bennington High School.

Doris married Donald W. Buchanan at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington on May 29, 1954. Don died September 25, 1997. She later married Christopher Vail in Marietta on December 27, 2008.

In earlier years Doris was employed in the office at the BenMont Corporation. In 1959 she went to work as a stenographer at Vermont District Court and in 1968 was named the Court Clerk, a position she held until 1990 when she was elected Probate Judge for Bennington County.

At the time of Doris' retirement on January 30, 2009 she was presented a plaque by Governor James Douglas recognizing her as the longest serving public official in the Vermont Judicial System with 50 years service.
Doris was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and a member of St. Anne's Society at the church. She was also a member of the Vermont Probate Judges Association, Unit 13 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Kuwanis Club and the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed traveling, reading and knitting.

Survivors include a daughter and a son-in-law, Amy B. and Kevin D. Squiers of Acworth, GA and; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott D. and Jean E. Buchanan of High Point, NC and John D. and Ruthann C. Buchanan of Grantham, NH; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey D. Smith (Pamela), Jeremy D. Smith, Ashley E. Phillips (Derick), Jenna L. Buchanan (Josh), David J. Buchanan, Brett Squiers and Bradley Squiers; three great-grandchildren, Scotlynn and Emelia Phillips and Adrianna Smith; a sister, Barbara Parmenter of Bennington; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Buchanan was predeceased by a daughter Laurie J. Smith who died December 10, 2013 and a brother, Robert Stone.

Burial of her remains will take place at a later date in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
