Donald G. Foster Jr., 78, a resident of Bennington, Vermont, passed away unexpectedly following a long illness on June 20th, 2024 at his home. Born on May 15th, 1946, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was the son of the late Donald G. Foster Sr. And Mary Catherine (Perry) Foster. Being a military family, Don moved around a lot as a child. Most of his younger years were spent in Topanga Canyon, California where he received his early education. Don later went on to attend Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California. Following his graduation, Don entered the United States Marine Corps. Don served as a computer operator during the Vietnam era. In December of 1971, Don married the former Charlene Kittel, in Evergreen, Colorado. Eventually the couple settled in Woodford, Vermont and raised their family. Don had a long and successful career as a reputable, kind, and well known carpenter. He took great pride in his work and that helped him make many friends while building and remodeling their homes. Don also loved traveling around the country and the world. Just last year he traveled to Maui, Hawaii, and was able to achieve his goal of being in all 50 states. This was in thanks to his daughter Melissa called and said; “Pack your bags, we’re all going to Maui!” He and Charlene also enjoyed traveling across the United States and Canada by train. Don found a love for baseball when his son Scott began Little League. He attended all of his games and enjoyed them all. Riding on the tail of his love for travel; his son Brendan is a gifted snowboarder who could only attend competitions if Don could tag along. This led to adventures to places like; Japan and Finland. He cherished his visits with grandchildren and chatting the hours away about their interests. Weather that be theatre, softball, snowboarding, skateboarding, and science. Don was a wealth of knowledge. He didn’t know it all but he knew enough about almost everything. This made him the one to call when you need any kind of information to advice on carpentry to song lyrics to just about any trivia question you could think of. He loved spending time on his deck listening to the babbling brook, and again chatting with dear friends and neighbors. Although Don’s sudden passing had left his family and friends heartbroken. His family is able to take comfort in an expression he often used when something went wrong or didn’t go their way; “It’s just all part of the adventure.” Cheers to a life well lived, he will be deeply missed. Survivors include his wife of 52 years; Charlene Foster. His children and their spouses; Scott Foster (Catherine) of Bennington, Brendan Foster (Trina) of Ferrisburgh, Vermont, and Melissa Steer (Dave) of San Francisco, California. His grandchildren; Ella Steer, Abigail Foster, Ava Foster, and Gavin Foster. His sister; Diana Hartman. His nieces; Shelly Mauck, Tracy Stratton, and Shannon Martello. A few of his many friends; Dave and Enid, Don and Janet, Kathy and John, Linda, Cynthia and Bob, and Karen. Following in Don’s wishes there will be no calling hours or formal funeral services at this time. The family plans to have a private celebration of life at a later date.
