Dennis M. McGurn, 75, a resident of Babcock Lake, in Grafton, New York, died Monday, October 31, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Nursing home in Delmar, New York following a long illness.
He was born in Bennington, Vermont on December 8, 1940, Dennis was the son of the late Patrick and Frances (Enright) McGurn.
He received his primary education in Bennington, was a graduate of Saint Columbus High School in Schenectady, New York, and attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. He later served in the United States Air Force where he was honorably discharged.
Dennis owned and operated the Wine Cellar at Camelot Village and the Beverage Store on North Street in Bennington. He also served for many years as a Town Justice of Grafton, New York from which he retired. He was a member of the State Magistrate Association of New York.
Dennis was an integral member of the Babcock Lake community, serving on both the Babcock Lake Estates Board of Directors and the Babcock Lake Property Owners Association board. He was one of the persons instrumental in the purchase of the lake and the formation of the Babcock Lake Estates, signing the Certificate of Incorporation, dated September 8, 1976. For several years he oversaw the operation of the lake water system and was responsible for published the Babcock Lake Directory. In later years, he could be seen riding his ATV around the lake nearly every afternoon. Dennis loved the lake.
Survivors include two sisters, Susan McGurn of Concord, North Carolina, and Patricia McGurn of Schenectady, New York, two brothers, Michael McGurn of Zephyrhills, Florida, and Kevin McGurn of West Sand Lake, New York. He is also survived by three nieces, five nephews and 12 grand nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Mahar and Son Funeral home in Bennington, Vermont. The funeral will be held from Saint John Francis Regis Catholic Church in Grafton, New York on Friday November 4, at 11:00 a.m. immediately followed by internment at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington, Vermont.
