Mr. David (Dave) Girard, a resident of Manchester, VT and of Park Ridge, NJ, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT.
He was born in Boston, MA on October 22, 1939, and was raised in Bridgeport, CT. Dave was a graduate of the City College of New York's Baruch Business School.
Dave proudly served in the U.S. Army during the early 1960's where he was stationed in Germany. Following his military service, he began a career in the textile industry working for many years in Manhattan, NY for Berkshire Hathaway where he frequently travelled to textile mills in New England. After leaving corporate life he was self-employed and was the co-owner of the Girard Design Group, a home furnishings business with stores in Closter and Westwood, NJ. He continued to work on a part-time basis up until the time of his death.
His home and business were in New Jersey, but his heart and his friends were in Vermont. So for many years he commuted faithfully, back and forth, between both homes. He always said that everything got better as soon as he crossed the state line into Vermont. Two of his favorite things to do were to meet friends and family for lunch and a beer, and to sit out on his deck watching the Battenkill River.
He was a life-long New York Yankees fan and as a boy listened to the games on the radio. Dave was a member of the VFW in Bennington, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Manchester and a former member of the VFW Harnett Fowler Post in Manchester Center.
Dave is survived by four children: Jacqueline Duddy and her husband Terry of Metuchen, NJ, Suzanne Sellers and her husband Glenn of Oldsmar, FL, Michael C. Girard and his wife Jodi of Ocean, NJ and their mother, Gloria Girard of Monroe, NJ; and Ashley Girard and her fiancé, Billy Bancroft of Aberdeen, NJ and her mother and Dave's business partner Wendy Girard of River Vale, NJ. He leaves two grandchildren; Katherine Duddy and Philip Duddy, both of Metuchen, NJ.
A memorial celebration honoring Dave's life will be held own Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 12:00PM until 4:00PM at the VFW Post#1332, 137 North Street, Bennington, Vermont 05201.
Memorial contributions in Dave's name may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home, 325 North Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
