BENNINGTON-
David Michael Carey, 79, a resident of Bennington, Vermont passed away on June
20th, 2022 at Crescent Manor in Bennington, following a long line of health issues.
He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York to the late Lucille Augustine (Bullis) and James Robert
Carey. David grew up in Au Sable Forks, and Troy, New York where he attended local schools. He was enlisted in the United States Army serving for nearly three years before being honorably discharged in 1969. While in the Army, he worked as a truck driver and as a mechanic.
He married the former Donna May Canam and together they had four children. They lived in Hoosick Falls, New York where they raised their family until Donna's passing in 1975.
David drove truck and worked as a mechanic, working for Anheuser Busch, and Freihofer's as well as driving a garbage truck for a while. He also had his own tow truck and worked as a mechanic independently. David was well known locally for being an entrepreneur, specializing in scraping. He was recognized each time he went to the Bennington Town Dump and always had help with unloading his vehicle. He frequented the Stewarts in Pownal and for years, was a regular at Burger King. Known by his friends as Moondog. David hated rice and most vegetables, but had a soft spot for his peanut butter cups and sweets. He loved Harley Davidsons, and was always eager to add to his collection of bikes, even after he was no longer able to ride.
David was a proud member of the American Legion Post 0013 in Bennington, VT.
David is survived by four of his children: Michael Carey, of North Adams, MA, Jennifer Norman, of North Adams, MA, Danielle Longtin, of Bennington, VT, and David J. Carey, of Melrose, NY. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Alicia Carey, Cody Carey, Samantha Carey, Jacob Carey, Deanna Lescarbeau, Benjamin Jacobson, Sarah Norman, Joseph Norman, Lucas Longtin, Adam Longtin, Kendall Carey, Eli Carey, Cliff Carey, Oden Carey, and Angel Carey, David is also survived by several great grandchildren, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Donna Carey in November 1975, and a daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Jacobson in November of 2009.
A celebration of David's life will be held on June 25th, 2022 from 12:00pm-6:00pm at his
daughter Danielle's house located at 193 Barney Road Bennington, VT 05201.
Memorial contributions in honor of David "Moondog" Carey may be made directly to the
