Clyde C. Mears Sr.

February 3, 1932 — January 1, 2022

Clyde C. Mears Sr., 89, a former resident of Middle Pownal Road in Pownal, VT and Brookdale Senior Living, died on Saturday January 1, 2022 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a long illness. Clyde was born in Bennington, VT February 3, 1932. He was the son of the late Clyde and Florence (Ward) Mears and for over 60 years, Clyde was married to the love of his life Shirley (McCoy) Mears. Shirley passed on August 1, 2019.

Community and celebration were mainstays in Clyde's life. He was a longtime member of the Moose and Elks Clubs, VFW Post 1332 and the American Legion Post 13. Clyde loved spending his time with family and close friends always laughing and telling stories, mowing the lawn on sunny Vermont days, playing card games in his garage and hosting cookouts with a drink in hand.

For over 50 years Clyde was employed as a truck driver by William E. Dailey Inc. and received his education in the Bennington School District. Often known as the informal Mayor of Pownal, you could always count on a wave from Clyde as he drove by in the big white cement mixer.

Clyde is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Steve Gallant of Pownal; his son and daughter-in-law, Clyde Jr. and Sharon Mears of Bennington; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Robin Mears of Montpelier; his sister, Lila McCoy of Florida; his brother Milo Mears and companion Mary Jean Bratcher of Bennington; his eight grandchildren and their spouses (Melissa & Jason Lavery, Travis Mears & Travis Stock, Cody Mears & Pauline Stevens, Jason and Sophia Gallant, Stephanie & Jimmy Kimball, Allyson & Curt Healey, Matt & Tanh Mears and Lauren & Mike Ball) and his twelve great grandchildren (Jacob, Logan, Shania, Hunter, Sarah, Samantha, Amelia, Quinn, Brett, Wade, Sydney and Cameron); several nieces, nephews and cousins; and close family friend Marc Bottesi and his family of Williamstown, MA. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Pam Mears and granddaughter Heather Sprague and two sisters, Frances Blake and Lois Weaver.

A celebration of Clyde's life will be held at a later date to be announced.

The burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family at the family lot at White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington.
