Cleave C. Roya Jr.

June 27, 1949 — November 15, 2021

Cleave C. Roya Jr., 72, a resident of Hickory Hill Road in Shaftsbury, VT died Monday November 15, 2021 at his residence following a long illness with his wife Sonja by his side.

He was born in Montpelier, VT June 27, 1949. He was the son of Cleave C. Roya Sr. and the late Evelyn (Grech) Roya. He received his early education in Montpelier and later graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School. He married the former Arlene Freeman in 1968. Arlene died in 2006. He later married Sonja Marie (Blake) Trottier on October 25, 2014.

In earlier years Cleave had been employed at the Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal. He later worked at the Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington and from 1986 to 2002 owned and operated the Winning Image Fitness Center in Bennington. Cleave was always willing to help people. In retirement he enjoyed restoring old cars and making furniture. Cleave also enjoyed volunteering at the Manchester Food Shelf.

Cleave was a member of the American Legion Post 13. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, cutting wood, motorcycling, making jelly and going out to dinner.

Survivors include his wife, Sonja Roya of Shaftsbury, VT, a son, Steven Roya and his wife Tammy of Bennington. His father, Cleave C. Roya Sr. of Northwood, NH. His stepchildren, Cheryl Sorel and her husband David of Pownal, VT., John Davey Jr. and his wife Amanda of Pownal, VT and Rebecca Davis and her husband Rick of Bennington, VT. One granddaughter, Andrea. Three step granddaughters Jessica Hemingway and Jada and Chloe "Bisquit" Davis. Three great grandchildren, Brayden, Vail and Jackson. Four step grandsons, Anthony, Cameron and Carson. Two sisters, Virginia Roya of Northwood, NH and Kim Young and her husband Doug of Roxbury, VT. His best friends who were like family, Ken and Jean Dente and Frank and Kathy Henrick. Along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Saturday November 20, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

The funeral will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday November 21, at 2:00 p.m.

There will be a reception following the services on Sunday at the Beech Street Firehouse.
