Charles D. "Pete" Taylor

Charles D. "Pete" Taylor, age 84, a long time resident of Woodward Drive in Bennington died on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.
Born on February 15, 1932, in Bennington, he was the son of the late Alfred H. and Marguerite (Higgins) Taylor. His grammar school education was received at the former St. Francis de Sales Academy. Following graduation from Bennington High School, class of 1951, he enlisted in the United States Navy and during the Korean Conflict, served as a Radioman aboard the U.S.S. Paiute ATF 159.

Following military service, he enrolled at St. Joseph's Business College and in 1955, he became employed at Gladstone Shoes, Inc. on Main St. and was eventually named manager. Gladstone's later became Taylor shoes under Pete's management from 1984 until 1987.
After closure of the shoe store, Pete became an employee of the State of Vermont Department of Employment and Training, working as a Veterans Employment Representative. He retired from this position in 1995. From 1996 to 2004, he served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, (RSVP).
On September 1, 1956, he married Jane F. Ryan of Bennington at St Francis de Sales Church. Together they raised two sons; Michael and Daniel.

A devout Catholic, and daily mass attendee at Sacred Heart and St. Francis de Sales Church, Pete served as a member of the Parish Council, was a Lector, and member of the Worship and Spirituality Committee. In later years, he used his beautiful singing voice for various church services.
Pete enjoyed walking, was an avid sports fan, and followed the Boston Red Sox and the New York Football Giants. In his younger years, he played high school baseball and fast pitch softball for the former Prince's Restaurant Teams.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Jane of Bennington, two sons: Michael (Susan Ransom) of Shaftsbury, VT and Daniel of Bennington.
He also leaves two very special grandsons; Nicholas and Ian Taylor, both of Shaftsbury.
He also leaves his siblings including; Barbara Downing (Charles) of Bennington, Beverly Feeney (James) of Bennington and Marguerite "Peggy" Jones (Robert) of Locust Grove, VA.
He also leaves two sisters-in-law; Sally Ryan and Mary Ann Atkinson and several nieces and nephews Pete was predeceased by a sister Nancy Frasier, and brothers-in-law; Edward Frasier, Patrick Ryan and Al Atkinson.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. on Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 at which time a Prayer service will be held, followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at Sacred Heart St Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington, VT.
