Charles M. "Charlie" Hunter

BARNARD, VT

Charles M. "Charlie" Hunter, 72, a resident of Barnard and a former long-time resident of Nahant, MA, died Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington, VT surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Phoenix, AZ May 17, 1945, he was the son of the late Junius A. and Kathrine F. (Haverty) Hunter. His birthmother died shortly after childbirth and he was lovingly raised by the late Junius N. and Rita (Mahoney) Hunter. Charlie received his education in Lynn, MA and was a graduate of Classical High School in Lynn. During the Vietnam War Charlie served in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees.

He married childhood sweetheart Mary Christine Linnane at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Nahant, MA on October 21, 1967.

For many years Charlie worked in the Public Works Department for the town of Nahant. Following his retirement, Charlie and Chris moved to Barnard, VT in 2005. In his retirement, Charlie enjoyed part-time work at several companies in Vermont, including a job as a medical courier with the Veterans Administration in White River Junction. During his entire career in both Nahant and Barnard, Charlie owned and operated Charlie Hunter Custom Slip Covers and was a master of his art in creating quality custom-made slipcovers.

Charlie especially enjoyed the simple things in life, such as cooking and spending time with family, boating, fishing, and playing golf. He was mechanically inclined and loved to fix things. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was proud of his part in teaching his granddaughter to drive.

He leaves behind his endeared wife of 50 years, Christine Hunter of Barnard; beloved daughters and son-in-law, Julie and Markus Blackwell of Barnard and Jeannine Louise Hunter of Rockland, MA; cherished granddaughter and grandson, Lauren Booth of Barnard, VT and Levi Booth of Bethel, VT; his adored sister, Louise Claflin, married to Bruce Claflin of West Medford, MA; his two beloved brothers Phillip Hunter married to Linda (Page) Hunter; and Francis Hunter married to Debbie Hunter of Swampscott, MA and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Charlie Hunter will be held later in the spring at a time to be announced.

Hunter's memory may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, whose mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
