Charles E. Capriola Jr.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Joan Meo Capriola in 2016, a son, Charles E. Capriola, III in 2009 and a son-in-law Jon Garhartt in 2017. He is survived by a daughter Robin Capriola-Garhartt of Bennington, Vermont; a son Gary Capriola of Maui, Hawaii as well as his daughter-in-law Tamara Mallory Capriola of Shaftsbury, Vermont, five grand-children and three great-grandchildren.
Charles graduated from Port Chester, New York high school in 1951. He received his B.S. in Political Science from Columbia University in 1961 where he was a member of the Crown and Septre Political Science Honors Fraternity. In 1967, Charles received his Juris Doctor decree from Fordham University School of Law, where he was on the student board and served as Vice President of his class.
He proudly and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1956 serving as Brig Warden at several duty stations.
An outstanding linebacker and center in the 1950's, he played for the University of Alabama in 1951, for Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot in 1954 and for the Kaneohe Hawaii Marine Corps Air Station in 1955. In 1958 he played professional football in the Easter League with the Father Alphonso Boys Club of Westchester County New York.
Charles worked for Allstate Insurance Company in the claims department while living with his wife and three children in Purchase, New York.
He moved to Vermont in 1969, passed the Bar in 1970. Governor Deane Davis appointed Charles as the first public defender of Bennington County in 1972. He was considered an accomplished trial attorney and tried over 120 civil and criminal jury matters to verdict. He was still practicing at the time of his death.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday, May 14, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
