Burton H. Luke

Burton H. Luke, 87 years old and a beloved farmer of East Hoosick, NY moved on to greener pastures on March 21st, 2017 with his loving family by his side. He was born December 13, 1929 in Cambridge, NY to Frederick B. Luke and Gladys Holmes Luke of Walloomsac, NY. He attended schools in Hoosick Falls, NY.
Burt married his pride and joy, Aileen Hoyt of Shaftsbury, Vt at an early age on December 30, 1950. Burt and Aileen were married for over 66 years " which Burt referred to as "too long." His first employment at Fairdale Farms in Bennington always held a special place in his heart. Burt and Aileen later moved back to the "Luke Homestead" in Walloomsac for five years building their herd of Holstein cows.
In March of 1965, Burt and Aileen purchased the farm in East Hoosick previously owned by his brother Bill. Burt farmed with his son Greg for 52 years on the family's beloved Hy-Acres Farm.
Burt was a very warm, gentle man with a very generous heart. He was a true farmer who loved to chat and was most passionate caring for his farm equipment and working the fields of the family's three hundred-acre dairy farm of which he was so proud. His favorite times were those spent with family and friends, giving his great-grandchildren rides on his International tractors and 4-wheeler. He gave us all endless memories to cherish with hayrides, holiday celebrations, camping trips, picnics at the farm and for his love for tractor pulls.
Burt was a fifty-year member of the New York State Holstein Association, a long-standing member of Farm Bureau and a past board member of Rensselaer County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was named Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1972. Hy-Acres Farm received the "Rensselaer County Farm Bureau Beautification Award" in 1984. In 1987 he was awarded the "Dairy Farm of Distinction."
Burt and Aileen raised a loving, close-knit family that includes two sons; Steve Luke (Sandy) of Hoosick Falls, NY, Gregory Luke (Jane) of East Hoosick NY and four daughters; Susie Morse (Terry) of Bennington Vt., Kathy Bugbee (Larry) of Hoosick Falls NY., Lisa Saunders (Jerry Keays) of Greenwich NY, and Judy Stannard (Burt) of Valley Falls NY. He also leaves his nephew Billy Luke whom meant the world to him. Burt's greatest joy in his life was his family. He was so proud of his fourteen grandchildren and he dearly loved his eight great-grandchildren with another great-grandchild expected in June.
He is survived by his two sisters; Mary Tudor of White Creek, NY and Sarah Snyder of Eagle Bridge, NY.
Donations in memory of Burt can be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children or the New York State Tractor Puller's Association. Calling hours will be Friday, March 24th from 4-7 pm at Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington. Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 25th at 11 am at the First Baptist Church, Main St, Hoosick Falls, NY. Graveside service and burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.
