BASIL D. FRENCH, II OBITUARY
BENNINGTON, VERMONT
Basil D. French, II, 89, a resident of Bennington, died Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Bennington Health and Rehab surrounded by his family.
Basil was born in Concord, NH, on May 2, 1930 to Basil D. and Laura (Bossey) French. He received his education in Concord, and graduated from St. John's Catholic High School in 1948. Over the years he had worked at various racetracks including Rockingham Park, Belmont Park and Green Mountain Racetrack, and various county fairs throughout the region. He retired from Bridgeport Jai Alai in 1995. Following his retirement he enjoyed buying, refinishing and selling antiques. Basil was a life member of the Bennington Elks Lodge and an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He also loved listening to jazz and big band music.
Basil is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Barbara Fontana whom she married on October 8, 1955. Besides his wife, he is survived by their children: Sharon (Adrian) Buck of Candia, NH, Linda (Kevin) McLenithan of North Bennington, VT, Basil (Mika) French, III of Milford, CT, Nancy (Rodney) Saunders of Bennington, and Sandra French of Bennington. He leaves nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Basil's family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff of Bennington Health Rehab for taking such good care of him and Mahar Funeral Home for the arrangements.
At his request there will be no services. Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life October 26, from 1-4 p.m at the Tap House.
Should friends desire memorial contributions may be made to the Elks Silver Tower Fund through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
