Barry J. Quigley (Quigley)

Barry J. Quigley, a resident of Main Street, Shaftsbury, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Vermont Veterans Home three weeks shy of his 73rd birthday.

Born in Albany, NY on August 22, 1945, he was the son of the late Robert Quigley and Florence (Turner) Quigley who survives. Barry received his early education in the Rutland, VT and Colonie, NY schools and was a graduate of Colonie, NY High School.

Following high school he immediately enlisted in the U. S Army at age 17.

He served in West Germany and Southeast Asia. A highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as a Staff Sargent in the 75th Ranger Infantry Regiment, during which time he received two bronze stars for heroism and three purple hearts among various other awards. He also had the honor of being chosen the 3rd Army's "Soldier of the Year". Promoted to S/SGT, Barry was assigned as team leader in the Rangers 4 man LLRP unit and was the youngest S/SGT serving in Europe. He retired from the Army on May 22, 1970 and left the Army permanently disabled. He spent the next 18 months in Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Colorado where he underwent multiple surgeries while recovering from his wounds.

Following his discharge Barry returned to Colonie where he graduated from Siena College in 1975 with a degree in marketing.

Barry married the former Andrea McKeever on April 19, 1993.

When his body would allow Barry lived a life full of adventure working as an award winning equestrian, part-time movie actor and a working cowboy. He will be remembered for his quick wit and Irish humor. Along with Bob Spangler and the late Jim Howley, Barry started the first local Vietnam Veterans group in the area. Barry was member of the NRA, member and vice-commander of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 4 and was a life member of the Hale Mountain Fish and Game Club.

Barry's family would especially like to thank members of the Bennington Rescue Squad and the staff at the Vermont Veterans Home for their outstanding care and professionalism during Barry's long illness and also special thanks to Bridgett Brock who cared for Barry for three years and most especially to Dr. Carol Salazar and the nurses and staff of B Wing.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Andrea Quigley of Shaftsbury; two sons, Scott (Karen) Quigley of Nisquayania, NY and Ryan Quigley of Schenectady, NY; a step-son, John (Susan) Cerreta of Shaftsbury; two granddaughters, Maigon (Nick) Ferrara and Kaitlyn Cerreta and his many close friends.

The funeral will be held from Four Chaplains All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday at the Veterans Home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial with military honors will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Barry Quigley's memory may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
