Barbara D. Colvin, 88, widow of Edwin A. Colvin, a longtime resident of Shaftsbury, VT died Friday April 9, 2021 at the Watson House in North Bennington.
Barbara was born in Holyoke, MA May 26, 1932. She was the daughter of the late George Crowley and Helene (Czerwinski) Crowley.
Barbara met her future husband Edwin A. Colvin soon after she moved to North Bennington with her mother and stepfather. Ed was selling Christmas wreaths house-to-house. When Barbara opened the door he was so enamored that he failed to collect the ten cents for the cost of the wreath. A favorite family story, in jest, was how Barbara repaid this debt many times over during the term of their sixty-four year marriage. Barbara and Edwin were married at the North Bennington Baptist Church on December 16, 1950. Mr. Colvin died January 26, 2015.
In earlier years Barbara worked at the Union Carbide Corporation and later, along with her husband, owned and operated the Shaftsbury Country Store. When she became pregnant with her first son Bill, after thirteen years of trying to start a family, they sold the store and Barbara became a stay-at-home mom. It was a role in which she excelled.
Barbara supported Edwin's career and political aspirations and was a constant presence in her children's lives. She was a Cub Scout leader, a chaperone on nearly every school field trip and the Colvin house became a favorite assembly spot for children throughout the neighborhood. Barbara and Ed traveled extensively to watch their boys play sports. Later her granddaughters became the shining lights in her life. She enjoyed walking, skiing, travel, sewing and playing the organ, but her family and their joy, comfort and success were always her primary interests.
Survivors include her son, William B. Colvin and his wife Jessica Chapman of Bennington. Two grandchildren, Mia Colvin of Bennington and Skye Colvin of Shaftsbury. A brother, Ronald Stufflebeam of Burlington survives as do a niece Sue Ghobadi (Walton) and husband Ben of Williston, VT and nephew Ed Walton and wife Deloris of Berlin, VT. Barbara also leaves her best friend of over seventy years, Ethel Farrar of Shaftsbury. Ethel was much more a sister to Barbara than a friend and became a second mom to Barbara and Ed's two boys. In addition to her husband Edwin, Barbara was pre-deceased by a son, Edwin A. Colvin and a sister Joan Walton.
There will be no calling hours or funeral services.
The burial will be private and will take place at the family lot at Grandview Cemetery in Shaftsbury, VT at the convenience of the family.
