Aula J. Evans (Nelson)

November 12, 1928 — September 23, 2017

Mrs. Aula Joann (Nelson) Evans age 88, a resident of Sunderland Hill Road, in Sunderland, VT died on Saturday, September 23, at her home following a period of failing health.

Mrs. Evans was born November 12, 1928 at Orange Memorial Hospital, Orange, NJ.

She was the daughter of Edward F. and Aula (Alexander) Nelson. After spending her childhood in West Orange, NJ, the family moved to Brookside, NJ.

A graduate of West Orange High School, she attended Berkley Secretarial and also Central Park School of Art, after which she worked as a Fashion Model and Fashion Illustrator for several years, which included CB Sports in Bennington, VT.

Aula married John (Jack) H. Evans in 1955. It was in 1957 they moved to Arlington, Vermont. Aula and family returned to New Jersey for three years before moving to Shaftsbury, VT in 1969. Later she and Jack built their last home in Sunderland, VT, moving into the home in 1979.

Mrs. Evans was an active member of the East Arlington Federated Church, the Enterprise Society and singing in the choir. Mrs. Evans enjoyed her family and loved cooking and decorating the home for them.

She was a seamstress for the family as well as friends and acquaintances. She was a skilled quilter, embroiderer and sewer who won blue ribbons at the Hildene Needlework shows. However, what she enjoyed most was being able to make many items of clothing for her family. Mrs. Evans also enjoyed camping, and gardening. She often pickled and froze enough vegetables to take the family through to the next growing season with few purchases needed.

In later years of her marriage, Mrs. Evans cared for her husband at home, dedicating her energies to him as his health diminished over time.

Besides her husband of sixty-two years, Aula is survived by her children: Aula DeWitt, Gail Albright (Jim), and Marc Evans (Connie). She leaves her six grandchildren: Alex DeWitt, Jason Albright (Reona), Clayton Albright (Ashley), Sarah Harwood (Ashley), Silas Albright (Sarah) and Craig Evans, as well as six great grandchildren.
