Audrey Schmay Jones

Audrey Schmay Jones 96, a longtime resident of Shaftsbury and more recently Bennington, Vermont, passed away peacefully on June 26th, 2024 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Born on December 24th, 1927 in Troy, New York. She was the daughter of the late Nelson and Irena (Cottrell) Schmay. Audrey graduated from Troy High School, and later from SUNY Albany. On May 23rd, 1953, she married Arthur S. Jones Sr. in Troy. In 1960, they moved to Shaftsbury, Vermont where they raised their family. Art passed away on July 8th, 2013. They were married for over 60 years. Audrey worked for Rensselaer County Children’s Services. She later was the assistant town clerk in Shaftsbury. As well as a substitute teacher for the Southwestern Vermont Supervisory Union schools in and around Bennington. Audrey was a member of the Shaftsbury Historical Society, Shaftsbury Garden Club, and North Shaftsbury community club. She was a former member of the North Bennington Congregational Church, as well as its choir group and the community choir group. At one time she was also very active in the Bennington and Shaftsbury Farmers Markets. Audrey also enjoyed gardening, travel and spending time with friends and family. She is survived by her children; Melissa L. Jones of Burlington, Vermont, and Arthur S. Jones Jr.(Deborah Meehan) of Bennington. She is also survived by many loved nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. On August 1st, 2024, at 1pm there will be a celebration of life at the Four Chaplins Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. There will also be a reception to follow.
