Arthur E. Paulin

September 18, 1935 — July 19, 2017

Arthur E. Paulin, a lifetime resident of Shaftsbury, went to be with the Lord on July 19,2017.

Art was born in Bennington, VT on September 18,1935, the son of Joseph E. and Angeline (Coulter) Paulin.

Art received his early education at the Red Brick School in Shaftsbury. He graduated from North Bennington High School in 1953.

Art started selling Pontiac's for Walter Barber Pontiac immediately out of high school. In 1954, he became a school bus contractor, 30 years for Shaftsbury and 3 years for Arlington. Art opened an import car business, Paulin Inc. in 1957. It became a Chrysler Plymouth dealership in 1965 and added Dodge trucks in 1971. In 1981 Art began selling cars for Flynn Motors, and in 1992 started Paulin Inc. Auto and RV Sales.

Art was a member of the Vermont Grocers Association and served as a trustee on the Legislative Committee. He also belonged to the Vermont Auctioneers Association, Automotive Dealer Association and a Representative on the New England Chrysler Dealer Advertising Association.

Art was in the Army Reserves for nine years, part of 204th Ordinance in Bennington.

Art married Betty J. VanNess in June of 1969 at the First United Methodist Church in Shaftsbury.

Art served as President and CEO of Paulin Inc., of which he and Betty started in Shaftsbury in 1982. They added North Bennington Paulin Inc. in 1984 then added Arlington Paulin Inc. in 1994. Art and Betty retired in 2005 and spent their winters in Polk City Florida. Art's greatest love was his seven Chihuahuas.

Art is survived by his wife Betty; a sister Beatrice Mattison of Shaftsbury; and his five children, Stephen Paulin of Nashua, NH, Robert (April) Paulin of Hoosick Falls, NY, Bonnie Kinney (Art Barber) of North Bennington, Tanya Paulin of Shaftsbury, and Melissa (Perry) Harrington of Holly Ridge, NC; nine grandchildren, David Guetti, Jodi Paulin, Stephen Paulin Jr., Christine Robinson, Crystal Conn, Bridget Gallant, Jessica Vetter, Cayla Vetter and Katelyne Gross; sixteen great grandchildren. Art was predeceased by three sisters; B. Ardella Morin, Marion Carnagy and Ruth Wetherell and a grandson, Michael C. Paulin.

Calling hours will be held Monday, July 24, 2017 from 4-7p.m. at Mahar and Son Funeral Home.

The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Shaftsbury at 2:00pm on July 25, 2017.
