Arthur P. Lemieux, a resident of Safford Street in Bennington, passed away on May 28, 2018.
Art was born in Bennington, Vermont on December 9, 1938. He was the son of the late Arthur E. (Kid Jack) Lemieux and Grace (Bent) Lemieux. Art grew up working in a variety of family businesses in Bennington. In his early years Art worked in the family brick business. Art took great pride in Bennington area homes and landmarks built using Lemieux bricks. Art also worked in his family business of selling fruits and vegetables throughout town.
Art received his education at Cora B. Whitney School and later Bennington High School. Art graduated from Vermont Technical College as an electrical technician. He later went on to serve in the United States Army stationed in Taiwan where he was involved in communication interceptions.
Upon return to Bennington, Art married the love of his life, Sandra (Bubbles) Kupiec at Saint Francis de Sales Church. Art used his education and management skills to build a lifelong career at Union Carbide Corporation, which became known as Eveready Battery. Art took great pride in his part of manufacturing quality products for the military and industry. After retirement from Eveready Battery, Art work in the post office at Bennington College, where he enjoyed working with the students and faculty.
Art spent many years volunteering in activities and groups dedicated to making Bennington a great place to live. He was one of the original committee members who worked toward the creation of a community pool. As a team member he went door to door to collect donations for the building of the Bennington Recreation Center. Art served as the chairman of the Bennington Board of Listers as well as volunteered as a Lister for many years. Art was a volunteer fireman with Stark Hose Company. Art served on the Parish Council of Saint Francis de Sales Church. Art was a board member of the Bennington Free Library and also a Justice of the Peace. Art was a life member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks #567, a lifetime member of VFW Post 1332, and a 30 year member of the American Legion Post 13.
Art had many hobbies. As a proud 5th generation Vermonter and a Benningtonian, Art had an avid interest in Vermont US Civil War history. Over his lifetime, Art studied Vermont's contribution to the war, collecting items of interest and travelling to Civil War markers throughout the state.
Art's greatest joys were his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Lemieux of Bennington. His children, Jeannie Cody and her husband Frank of Bennington, Suzanne Anair and her husband Richard Jr of Bennington; Four grandchildren, Patrick Cody, Bradley Anair, Franklin Cody, and Mitchell Cody all of Bennington; Two sisters, Kaye Wyman of North Carolina and Martina Hill of Colorado; a brother Mark Lemieux of Ohio; His uncle Edgar E. Lemieux of Bennington. He is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral will be held at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church on July 2, 2018 at 11am.
