Arlene G. Murphy (Alderman)

November 16, 1940 — September 25, 2021

Arlene Gladys (Alderman) Murphy, age 80, a long-time resident of Bennington and more recently of Shaftsbury, VT, passed away at SWVMC surrounded by her family, on September 25, 2021. Arlene was born November 16, 1940 in Berlin, New York to Alden & Dorothy (Teal) Alderman. She was the 5th child of 9 children. She graduated from Berlin High School and worked locally until meeting her husband.

Arlene married Patrick John Murphy of Bennington, VT on September 24, 1960. Mr. Murphy died January 23, 2016.

Mrs. Murphy was a stay-at-home mom until her children were older. Later, she worked at Catamount Elementary School as a teacher's assistant and at The Paradise Hotel as the front desk receptionist until her retirement. She was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Patriots. Arlene's greatest joy were her children and grandchildren. She especially loved shopping trips for the grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as Nanny. Arlene enjoyed her summer vacations with her children, day trips with her grandchildren and hosting parties and family reunions. Arlene was a long-time member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and then St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington after moving to Shaftsbury.

Arlene is survived by her three daughters: Kathryn (Craig) Weaver of Shaftsbury, VT, Nancy (Kelly) Haynes, of Hoosick Falls, NY, Patty (fiancé, Kevin Hyde) Gibbons of Eagle Bridge, NY. Two sons: Kevin (Katie) Murphy of Arlington, VT and Leo Murphy of Shaftsbury, VT. Her 16 grandchildren: Miles (Jillian) Weaver and Marybeth (Erik) Hopewell, Kelsey, Skye, Ben, Sam, Shae, Chelsey and Quinn Haynes, Jessa (fiancé, Sean Power) Jade (fiancé, Perry Laughner) and Jennifer Gibbons, Jake (Mikaela Marbot), Maggie, Erin and Patrick Murphy. Her three great grandchildren: Hadley, Haiden and Oakley Weaver. Her five sisters: Marylou (Tony) Abruzzise, Beverly Belville, Joan (Paul) Czornyj, Linda (Bob Smith) Watrous and Gail (Paul) Boudreau. One brother, Wesley (Joyce) Alderman. Sisters n Laws: Joan Douglass and Barbara (Larry) Molloy and many nieces and nephews.

Arlene was predeceased by two brothers: Robert and Rodney Alderman.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, 12pm " 1:15pm. The funeral service will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 2pm. A reception will follow.

The burial will take place in the family lot at the Old Bennington Catholic Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
