BARRE
Alexander R. Murray, 95, formerly of Barre, Vermont died peacefully on May 31, 2021 at the Vermont Veterans' Home in Bennington, Vermont.
Alex was born in Barre on February 8, 1926 to Alexander and Minnie (Stanley) Murray. After attending Spaulding High School, he enlisted in the Navy during WWII just before his 18th birthday and served with the Seabees in the Philippines and Japan during the US occupation.
He returned to Barre, enrolled in the Barre School of Memorial Art and upon his graduation in 1949 went to work for Nativi & Co. This was the first job in a long career as a draftsman in the granite industry and, although he was mostly located in Barre, he spent time working for monument retailers in Massachusetts and Ohio. His talent and artistry earned him the top design prize in a contest sponsored by Rock of Ages in 1983. His career as a draftsman was featured in an article prepared by the staff of the Vermont Granite Museum in 2008 and published in the Times Argus.
Alex was also a talented jazz musician. He played the drums in a jazz trio at venues in Vermont and New Hampshire for many years.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, the former Margaret Dwyer, and six children, Jan Murray (Jean Kilgore) of Boston, MA, Nancy Murray (Paul Vlahakis) of White Cloud, MI, Alexander "Sandy" Murray (Todd Bayer) of Altadena, CA, Vincent Murray (Linda) of Hardwick, VT, James Murray of Broomfield, CO and Christopher Murray of Littleton, CO, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Burial will be at a later date.
