BENNINGTON-
Alan Charles Palmer, 73, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home, passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2021. He was born in Middlebury, VT on March 31st, 1948 to the late Ethel (Kirby) and William Palmer.
Alan grew up in Whiting, VT and attended local schools. He graduated from Otter Valley High School in the Class of 1966. After graduation, Alan enlisted in the United States Navy. He served two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded various medals for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star. Alan was very proud to have been able to serve his country as a SeaBee.
After completing his years of active duty, Alan went on to serve twenty years in the reserves, officially retiring from the Navy in April of 1992. While in the reserves, Alan started his woodworking career at Kennedy Brothers in Vergennes, VT. When Kennedy Brothers closed Alan started working for Browns Novelty in East Middlebury VT. He later retired from Maple Landmark in Middlebury, VT
Alan had a love for woodworking beginning at a very young age working side by side with his dad, creating beautiful construction models and other wood trinkets. He spent most of his time at his home in Panton, VT in his woodshop. When he wasn't creating wooden masterpieces, Alan would enjoy spending time in his garden and admiring the beautiful flowers he grew. He also enjoyed working on antique gas engines and water pumps.
In October of 1970, he married Corrie Bliek. Together, they had two sons: Mark and Bruce.
Alan is survived by his two sons; Mark (Amy) Palmer, of Addison, VT and Bruce (Casie) Palmer, of Colchester, VT. and three grandchildren; Cody (Amber) Palmer, of Summerville, SC; and Sarah and Ryan, both of Colchester. He is also survived by his former wife, Corrie Palmer, of Waltham, VT his brother, Neal (Suzanne) Palmer, of Shoreham, VT and his sister, Lois (Steve) Deitz, of Poultney, VT. Alan is also survived by many special nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Alan will be held at 1pm on November 5th, 2021 at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations in memory of Alan be sent to the Vermont Veterans Home through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
