Alan Robertson Leake, a Bennington Vermont native, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, October 24, 2021. He was 69 years old.
Of long time New England family roots, he was born in 1952 in Bennington, Vermont. He was the fourth of five children to Richard Bryan Leake III and Jean Virginia Campbell. He was educated locally in Bennington, was a 1971 graduate of Mt Anthony Union High School, and a 1973 graduate of St Joseph College.
He was an arithmetical prodigy and had great reading interests in history and biography that led to his hobby of genealogy research.
From youth to his 40's he worked as a farmhand laborer on the family farm. From 1974-1985, he was affiliated with the Bennington Generals semi-pro baseball team as score keeper and statistician. In 2003-2004, he worked in kitchen utility at the Equinox Hotel in Manchester Vermont. In his later working years, from 1996 onwards, he was a cemetery grounds maintenance laborer at Park lawn Cemetery in Bennington.
A sports fan and participant for many years, he participated in league bowling for some 20 years, with best results of a 244 high game, a 609 three games total, and a 765 four game series.
From 1978 and for many years, he participated in competitive running events in road running races and summer track and field events, with best results being the following: 1 mile - 5:52, 5K - 19:73, 10 K - 42:50, 10 mile - 72:19, half marathon - 1:40:20, marathon - 3:58:41. One of his proudest moments was participating in the Marine corps Marathon, helping a team of family and friends push his brother, Scott, in a wheelchair as a fundraiser for ALS.
Alan never married. He is survived by his siblings, Paul of Mill Valley, CA, David, of Grand Isle Vermont, and Elvy, of Chicago, Il. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, and cousins.
At the convenience of the family, a private burial will be at the Leake family plot in the Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington, Vermont.
