Obituary

Christopher J. Gagne, 43, a former resident of Shaftsbury, died unexpectedly Saturday, February 2, 2019 in St. Louis, MO where he had resided for the past year.

Born in Bennington on February 6, 1975, he was the son of Kathleen (Hamilton) Peterson of Bennington, Vermont. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of Mt. Anthony Union High School.

While residing in Bennington, Chris operated a “Mr. Fix It” business, repairing computers, small appliances and other items.

He was a tireless advocate for the homeless, prisoners’ rights and people with mental health or social justice issues. Chris was a selfless person and without hesitation would give his belongings and time to those he thought needed them more than himself. Chris’s favorite pastimes were nature photography, walks with his dogs, listening to music and enjoying the company of friends and family.

Survivors include his mother, Kathleen (Hamilton) Peterson of Bennington; a brother and sister-in-law, Ryan and Jacqueline Peterson and their son Finnley of Exeter, NH; his maternal grandmother, Sheila Hamilton of North Bennington and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfather James F. Hamilton of North Bennington, Vermont.

Chris was loved by all who had the opportunity to know him. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Christopher Gagne will be held in the spring at a time to be announced.

If friends desire to make contributions in memory of Christopher, they may be made to The Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home located at 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.

You were briefly a good friend in shared difficult times... in another time and reality. A memory of you brought me here now and I'm so sad that it was too late for me and too soon for you. I hope we both get it right next time around...

My deepest condolences to the family and friends. May you find comfort in your memories together and in God and his word the Bible. He promises to comfort us and give us the strength we need. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4/Philippians 4:7)

I have been asked by my sisters June and Ella, and for my brother to express their great sadness, at Chris's passing. My sons are equally sad, and send wishes of peace to Chris. Rest in peace.

It's been a very long time, but I have fond memories of the last time you came up to visit us in Montréal so many years ago. Rest well cousin.
