Marie Mattison Legacy, 89, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, died peacefully Friday, September 30 surrounded by her family. She was born in Bennington on April 20, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Mattison and Anna (Casey) Mattison. She received her education in the Bennington schools and graduated from Benn High in 1951 where she was a majorette for four years.
She married the late Harold Legacy in Bennington on August 4, 1962.
In earlier years Marie was employed at Union Carbide and then for 32 years at Mount Anthony Union High School, where she held several positions, her favorite being the supervisor of In School Suspension.
Marie and Harold were huge fans of scholastic wrestling, and were the founders of the Pep Squad for the wrestling team at Mt. Anthony Union High School. She loved to laugh and always had a story for anyone who would listen.
Marie is predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Harold J. Legacy, her brother-in-law Richard "Dick" Rabideau, her sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Donald Bogardus, and her brother Richard "Dickie" Mattison and her two dogs Cubby and Seia.
Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Kelley Legacy and Shawn and Becky Legacy, all of Shaftsbury, VT. She also leaves her five grandchildren; Scott Legacy II, of Shaftsbury, VT, Damian Legacy (Christian Taylor) of East Thetford, VT, Amber Denis (Simon Denis) of Toledo, OH, Brinkley Penny (Jahleel Penny) of Fort Wainwright, AK and Brianna Legacy (André Leatherwood) of Shaftsbury, VT and her three great-grandchildren: Layloni Penny, Griffin Denis, and Larshawn Penny; as well as one sister-in-law Evie Rabideau of Petersburg, NY and her "adopted sons," Eric Becker (Christine Becker) of Shaftsbury, VT and Roy Slade of Woodford, VT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at 1:00 PM, offered by her grandson, Most Reverend Damian Legacy (André Marie of the Holy Cross, OSP). Interment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 11:00 AM until the time of the Mass. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Marie Legacy's memory may be made to the Activities Fund of the Vermont Veteran's Home.
