Obituary for William May
William Hyatt May, 89, a resident of West Road Park in Bennington passed away Monday April 17, 2017 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a brief illness.
He was born at the family home in Pittsfield, MA November 22, 1927. He was the son of the late Franklin B. May and Margaret Louise (Artz) May. Bill received his education in Pittsfield and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Following high school Bill served in the United States Navy.
He married the former Barbara J. Hammer on June 6, 1964 in Garfield, NY.
For 25 years Bill was employed in the family business May Engineering in Pittsfield, MA. He later moved to Bennington and for 25 years worked as a truck mechanic at Fairdale Farms in Bennington from which he retired.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 90 in Pownal, VT and the Bennington Family Moose Lodge. He enjoyed word search puzzles, gardening and reading about the “After Life. He also enjoyed bowling. In earlier years Bill raced stock cars, number 13, at Lebanon Valley. His family was his main interest.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara J. May of Bennington. Their children, Charles D. Hessler (Joanne) of Pittsfield, Peggy Jenks (Vernon) of Bondville, VT, Joan Calicchia (Michael) of Bennington and Robert May (Melody) of Kannapolis North Carolina; Eighteen grandchildren and twenty six great grandchildren. His brothers and sisters, Beverly Simon, John May and Charles May along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Bonnie Johnson, a son, William Roy Hessler, three brothers, Franklin, Richard and George May and two sisters, Barbara Milne and Joan Derby.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday April 19, at 7:00 pm
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
